“Being a man is no excuse not to be a Nurse” – My Nursing Story

As the lucky prize winner of a brand new car with HCA’s Western Australia office, we sat down with Antony Ngari to find out about his nursing experience and why he chose to nurse Agency with us.

As Registered Nurse, working in Orthopaedic’s and Geriatric’s, Antony was first inspired to become a nurse by his Aunt. “She would often take me to work with her” Antony explains. “She was a very strong woman and used to tell me that being a man is no excuse not to be a nurse.

Having started his role with HCA in Perth back in 2012, Antony now works full-time agency, which fits perfectly around his busy life. The reason Antony was inspired to go into Agency nursing (instead of taking a permanent role) was off the back of some valuable advice he received from his Australian tutor. “My tutor said that you can have a few years experience in a ward and then work there with the same experience for 20 years, or you can challenge yourself to learn something different each and every year by working agency” Antony recalls.

When Antony doesn’t nurse, he is a local minister. This is why he loves the freedom and flexibility that comes with agency nursing, as it allows him to take on other duties at his church. “I work about 20 shifts a month, dependant on what is available. It helps to pay the bills” explains Antony. The financial benefits of choosing to work more shifts when needed, with a competitive pay rate, means Antony can assist his daughter with appropriate levels of care for her disability. “It allows me to put my adopted daughter, who unfortunately is deaf, through her special speech therapy school” says Antony.

His path to nursing in Australia is perfectly summed up as he explains to us that he is driven by his passion and strive to help others.

International Nurses thinking about nursing in Australia can benefit from hearing Antony’s experience of the registration process. “My biggest accomplishment was completing my conversion course in Australia, in which Ilearned so much. The reward was getting my AHPRA registration” says Antony. HCA guides International Nurses through every step of the process, from visa options, AHPRA registration and employment. “HCA are very supportive. They listen before speaking, which I find very important” Antony tells us. Find out more about nursing in Australia.

Upon finding out he won a brand new car:

When we spoke with Antony to inform him that he was the lucky winner of a brand new car, he couldn’t quite believe his luck. His 1999 police compound car was on its last legs and he can’t wait to drive to his shifts in the comfort of his new set of wheels.
